I do believe that literacy instruction is a means to help content area teachers reach their students and help them understand the complexities of their particular subject. In order to understand that level of instruction at the secondary school level students must be proficient and capable of understanding reading material at that level. I must also point out that reality dictates that everyone of the students that is afforded the opportunity to learn do not take advantage of their right to an education, that includes also literacy instruction. It is also the right of the student to demand and receive an education that includes also provides the proper literacy instruction in the content area(s).

Many students do choose to not take advantage of the learning opportunities that teachers provide to them. So, I ask, In understanding this, should a teacher try to cater a lesson to involve even those less interested students for the express purpose of generating their interest and getting them involved?
ReplyDeleteIn response to Mr. Kal, a lesson should at ALL times try to engage ALL students. Reality dictates that not all students will be engaged at all times, for varying reasons that change dynamically. However, we should NEVER stop trying to get everyone! How, then can we use the literacy techniques mention in Plaut's book to engage these students?
ReplyDeleteJust because a student "chooses" not to take advantage of their learning doesn't mean we as educators stop providing opportunities to learn. You do not need to cater to each child in the room, but you do need to differentiate your instruction so al students can be included in some way.
ReplyDeleteIn response to your post, I do agree that literacy instruction help content areas. However, it is the responsibility of everyone as a team to reach all students. as a special educator myself, I find that a lot of times students will test me to see what I will do. The population I work with will refuse to work just to see whether or not I actually care. I think that in this text, if we take nothing else from it, it’s the teacher that can make or break a students’ views of school and the importance of an education.
ReplyDeleteI believe that part of being an educator involves preparing that "hook" to get the uninterested students interested. Everyone should have the right, alot don't take advantage of it and its our job to reel them in.
ReplyDeleteOur right to a free and fair education a manifestation that should be exercised to the fullest for everyone. I see that there is a bias in regards literacy in certain content areas like Science, Mathematics, History, etc. English and other content areas that pertain to grammar are considered by most people as responsible for literacy instructions. Some students and parents do not connect literacy with math and science. I, myself, did not know that literacy should be connected in all content areas until I entered college. Now I understand how and why literacy should be included in all content areas. Teachers must be an advocate for literacy and students' rights to an education that equal and fair to all no matter what race or socioeconomic status. Teachers must uphold literacy rights for students in all content areas.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know that students are always aware of the importance of education or their rights within the school building. It is the job of the educator to inform as well as inspire students to want to be apart of the education process.
